○ Title: Crystallization of Water under Modulating Pressures
○ Abstract:
Beauty of crystal facets and dendrites found in ice flakes and quenched metals has captured one’s imagination as well as fundamental scientific interest in understanding the crystal growth mechanism associated with the roughening-faceting transition, surface instability, and fractal and dendritic pattern formation. The application of high pressure can exploit these fundamental phenomena of crystal growth, which can be readily compared with theoretical expectations. In this talk, I will describe the pressure-induced solidification of water under precisely controlled modulating pressures using dynamic-diamond anvil cell, exhibiting slow diffusion-controlled two-dimensional fractal growth, fast interfacial-controlled three-dimensional dendrite growth, shock crystal growth, and metastable crystal growth from super-compressed water.
